Signatures of Coronal Currents in Microwave Images

چکیده
Microwave emission from solar active regions at frequencies above 4 GHz is dominated by gyroresonance opacity in strong coronal magnetic elds, which allows us to use radio observations to measure coronal magnetic eld strengths. In this paper we demonstrate one powerful consequence of this fact: the ability to identify coronal currents from their signatures in microwave images. Speciically, we compare potential-eld (i.e., current{free) extrapolations of photospheric magnetic elds with microwave images and are able to identify regions where the potential extrapolation fails to predict the magnetic eld strength required to explain the microwave images. Comparison with photospheric vector magnetic eld observations indicates that the location inferred for coronal currents agrees with that implied by the presence of vertical currents in the photosphere. The location, over a neutral line exhibiting strong shear, is also apparently associated with strong heating.

Transversal oscillation of coronal loops that are interpreted as signatures of magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) waves are observed frequently in active region corona loops. The amplitude of this oscillation has been found to be strongly attenuated. The damping of transverse oscillation may be produced by the dissipation mechanism and the wake of the traveling disturbance. The damping of transversal ...

The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) installed on the NOAA-15, 16, and 17 satellites, is the new generation of a series of microwave imagers/sounders that can sense atmospheric moisture and other hydrometeors through clouds. This paper demonstrates the potential of multi-frequency AMSU-B data for classifying different types of hydrometeors. Ten types of these hydrometers have been co...

A coronal loop can be oscillated in various directions. A basic type of coronal loop oscillation is called transverse oscillation that can be caused by different factors, such as nearby active regions and flares. The damping of transverse oscillation may be produced by the dissipation mechanism or the wake of the traveling disturbance. The aim of this paper is to estimate the damping time of tr...
متن کاملCoronal Magnetic Field Measurements through Gyroresonance Emission
This article reviews the use of gyroresonance emission at radio wavelengths to measure coronal magnetic fields. The spiralling motion of electrons in the 200– 2000 G fields in the solar corona produces sufficient opacity to render the corona optically thick, making it easy to recognize such sources in microwave images from their coronal brightness temperatures. Where gyroresonance sources are p...
متن کاملAn investigation on the feasibility of applying MODIS snow cover products in cloudy weather by the employment of its integration with microwave images
Variation of snow cover area (SCA) in small to large scale catchment can be studied using MODIS snow products on daily to montly time step since the year 2000. However, one of the major problems in applying the MODIS snow products is cloud obscuration which limits the utilization of these products. In the current study, variation of SCA was investigated in Karoun basin, western part of Iran, us...
